Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, debilitating disease that attacks the myelin in the central nervous system—the protective sheath that covers the nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. When attacked, the transmission of nerve impulses are either slowed or blocked, affecting certain physical and cognitive abilities and skills. Nerve fibres become compromised when the attacked myelin becomes inflamed, which then compromises the nerves serving the affected area of the brain. Symptoms depend on which nerves in the body are affected during a relapse. One common symptom is numbness in specific areas of the body. Another common symptom is blurred vision caused by inflamed myelin impacting the optic nerve.

MS symptoms may include:

It may be possible to predict how your type of MS  will progress over time with the help of your doctor and/or care team. This is why it is important to get in touch with your doctor as you will then be able to start to monitor and learn to recognize your particular pattern of MS relapse and remission, and over time you and your care team will be equipped to better predict future MS progression.

People with MS can experience periods without symptoms, and in some people it might seem as if MS has disappeared; but in actuality, it is progressing, causing damage to the central nervous system without producing symptoms. If left untreated, the risk of causing significant damage when a relapse occurs increases considerably.

As MS is a chronic illness, it does require life-long treatment. It’s important to note that none of the MS therapies is a cure. But if taken regularly as prescribed by a doctor, medication will help keep your disease under control and may help to prevent disability caused by relapses in the future.
